The State of Downtown Report 2022-2024 captures the powerful momentum reshaping our downtown, driven by collaboration between public and private partners.

Downtown by the numbers

5th most livable city

In 2024, Calgary was ranked 5th most livable city in the world, and most livable city in North America, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.

 

Corporate head offices

106 corporate head offices in Calgary in 2023. Calgary has the 2nd highest number of head offices in Canada.

 

Approved projects

11 approved projects in the Downtown Calgary Development Incentive Program, resulting in 1,498 units, including 300 units at below-market rates. 7 office-to-residential projects expected to be completed in 2025.

Private investment

This program generates more than $3.5 of private investment for every $1 of public funding.

Major events

186 major events and conferences were hosted in Calgary in 2024, generating more than $250 million in economic impact

Housing

These projects will provide housing for roughly 2,400 people.

Description

Calgary's Bow building is just over 2 million square feet. By 2031, our goal is to have 6 million square feet of office space converted. 

  • 2021-2024: 1.75 million square feet of vacant office space was approved for conversion
  • 2025: Roughly 1 million square feet anticipated to be approved for conversion

$1.8 billion increase in assessed downtown property since 2022.

Over 1/3 of new housing units in downtown since 2021 were incentivized by The City's programs. 

$1 billion in public and private investment as a result of The City's four downtown incentive programs.
